Boston — After nearly nine years on the Boston City Council, John Tobin is stepping down.

O’Malley Kick-off 2

Friday evening before we left to visit distant friends, I came into a sparsely populated Annunciation Hall in West Roxbury for the Matt O’Malley kick-off for his Boston City Council run. Quickly and then relentlessly, the fans and followers joined until it was packed like a rave.

Were I any of his opponents for what was John Tobin’s District 6 seat for nine years, I would have thought, “Oh, crap!”

Eulogies for the Living Pol

They came by the hundreds last night for Matt O’Malley. On the dais, a phalanx of Boston and the commonwealth’s pols came to praise, not bury him.

The comparison with a funeral and serial eulogies was too obvious. In this case, the event was joyous and jocular. It was by right and time, one after another said, that O’Malley win the Oct/Nov special elections as District Six Boston City Councilor.

Tobin or Not Tobin

From Marry in Massachusetts The Ula Cafe in upper JP has become one of City Councilor John Tobin’s favorite constituent meeting joints. So that was an apt location for chatting with Matt O’Malley this morning. I’d known him before in his MassEquality life as well as his recent job running Steve Grossman’s campaign for MA [...]

Vacancy on the Boston City Council – Who’s Next

Posted on 07/07/10 No Comments

While I was shocked to hear the news that Boston City Councilor John Tobin was stepping down to take a position at Northeastern University, my immediate reaction to the news was “Who’s Next”.

This fall is promising to be an incredibly active political season, with races at nearly every level of the state wide offices, an opening left by Rep. Delahunt, and a challenge to Rep. Lynch (I am a Mac, of course), I know of only one person with the knowledge and name recognition to immediately step through the noise and clutter and into the campaign for this open seat, namely Matt O’Malley.

Matt O’Malley Throws His Hat Into The Ring for District 6

Matt O’Malley, the former political director of MassEquality, announced July 6 that he is running for City Council in Boston s sixth district following the announcement that City Councilor John Tobin will be stepping down after nine years in the position.

“It s something I ve always wanted to do,” O Malley said. “I’ve run for Councilor At-Large in the past and didn t win, but always had a nice showing.” O Malley has already been endorsed by Sheriff Andrea Cabrall and City Councilor At-Large John Connolly.

First Thoughts On Tobin Leaving

Matt O’Malley tells me that he is a candidate for that seat. O’Malley, currently field director for Steve Grossman’s campaign for state Treasurer, has run twice for an at-large council seat. He says he already has the backing of Sheriff Andrea Cabral (whose campaign he previously managed), and Connolly. Expect MassEquality (where O’Malley briefly worked) to be on his side as well. O’Malley grew up in West Roxbury and has been very active there, and is now a homeowner in JP — perhaps joining Arroyo and Chang-Diaz as a new JP power nexus?
